As we spent time listening to our crew members and educating ourselves through readings and stakeholder conversations, we decided to place our near-term focus on organizations that advocate for racial justice, impact Black youth and youth of color, and people who are food insecure. We also looked inward, realizing change must start from within, to address diversity across our crew.

Over the past two months, we have: 

• Teamed with Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization to donate $1M of our pasture-raised eggs (4.4 million eggs) to 17 food banks that serve Black populations and communities of color with high rates of food insecurity that has grown exponentially during the pandemic. This includes food banks in Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, Memphis, and Birmingham. We began delivering eggs to food banks in August and expect to complete the deliveries in the coming weeks. These eggs will help children and families who face hunger.
• Donated $100,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, supporting its mission to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans.
• Donated $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club across the country to include chapters in Austin, TX, Springfield, MO and St. Louis, MO. Because our crew is primarily based in Texas and Missouri, these communities are close to our heart as a business. In addition to our monetary donation that will support Club youth programming including gardens in Austin and the culinary center at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis Teen Center of Excellence in Ferguson, MO, our crew will have the opportunity to volunteer such as through virtual farm “field trips” and on-site construction of gardens (in Austin).
• Partnered with National Diversity Council, a national non-profit focused on sustainable diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and strategies. The goal of our partnership is to begin understanding how we can build a more diverse and inclusive crew, and work with their experts to build thoughtful plans against these learnings.     

As we’ve said before, this work will never end. We recognize the magnitude of racial injustice and will continue to listen, learn, and challenge ourselves to take action on issues related to diversity, equality, and inclusion.

Our hearts are with all those who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are doing everything we can to serve and support our crewmembers, consumers, and communities through this time. While the FDA has stated that there is no evidence of COVID-19 transmission through food or food packaging, we are taking extra precautions at Egg Central Station, our production facility in Springfield, MO, to keep our stakeholders safe. We have implemented several preventative measures to protect the health and safety of our crewmembers.

Our COVID-19 preventative measures include:

• Implemented COVID-19 protocol for handling potential cases in accordance with CDC guidelines, which includes contact tracing
• Personal protective equipment worn by all crewmembers in Egg Central Station, our production facility, including masks and gloves
• Staggered shifts and breaks as well as social distancing throughout facility to minimize contact between crewmembers
• Daily temperature checks via automated thermal scanner
• Increased hand sanitizer throughout facility
• Strict non-essential visitor policy
• Increased cleaning and sanitation procedures, including a daily deep clean of common areas as well as after each shift
• Sanitizing production floor daily (standard Vital Farms procedure)

These precautions are in addition to the strict food safety practices we always follow as a USDA-regulated facility. In addition to following USDA guidelines, we have achieved Safe Quality Food, or SQF, Level 3 certification, the highest level of such certification from the Global Food Safety Initiative. We are also one of the few members of the SQF “Select Site” program, meaning we are prepared for a safety audit on our facilities to take place at any time.

The health and safety of our crewmembers and customers is always our highest priority. We remain committed to doing our part to ensure households and communities have access to the food they need during this time, while maintaining the same commitment to animal welfare and food safety practices we’ve always upheld as a business.

We know there’s been a lot of clucking about the rising cost of eggs recently – we want to take a moment to share what that means for Vital Farms.

Simply put, we have not increased our prices at any point of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though times are different, our mission remains the same – to bring ethically produced food to the table, while doing right by our stakeholders.

While we control the cost that we sell to retailers, but not the prices on the grocery store shelf, we have no evidence that retailers have increased the prices of our products in their stores.

Unlike most eggs that are primarily produced in factory farm conditions, our products are not bought and sold on wholesale markets. This is because we work directly with around 200 family farms across eight states in the U.S., who share our commitment to ethical food and produce our eggs to the highest animal welfare standards in the industry.

So, despite fluctuations in demand, the cost of our eggs– nor other Vital Farms products – have not increased.

We know so many aspects of life look different now. Our hope is that our butter and pasture-raised eggs provide you and your family joy and nourishment during these uncertain times.
